Bombs rock Colombia ahead of summit

Colombian officials say there have been no casualties or damage from the explosions, which took place as more than 30 presidents and prime ministers arrived for the summit.

The first two low-power explosive devices were set off at around 7:30 p.m. local time on Friday (0030 GMT Saturday) near the US Embassy in the capital, Bogota, shortly after the arrival of US President Barack Obama, AFP reported.

“Nobody was killed, nobody was injured, and there was no damage,” a police official said on condition of anonymity.

The explosions were followed by two similar ones in Cartagena, which is hosting the Americas summit and is located some 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) north of Bogota.

“They occurred near a bus terminal and near a supermarket. There were no injuries and no damage,” General Rodolfo Palomino of the Colombian police told reporters.

The low-intensity blasts come as the Colombian capital and other major cities have witnessed urban guerrilla attacks for decades.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has been battling the Colombian government since 1964.

The rebel organization is believed to have 9,000 fighters operating across a large swathe of mountainous and jungle areas in eastern Colombia, according to government estimates.

However, in recent years, the Colombian military has pushed the group out of their encampments around major cities and into the dense jungles and high peaks of the Andean mountains.
