Bombing injures four Bahraini police

According to an Interior Ministry statement issued on Saturday, one of the officers is in critical condition. No further details of the bombing were released.

On April 24, Bahraini security officials said a bombing wounded four members of the police force in the northwestern village of Diraz.

The bomb attack in Bani Jamra, located about 15 kilometers (9.4 miles) west of the capital, Manama, comes at a time when anti-regime protesters continue their peaceful demonstrations in the country.

Protesters took to the streets in several towns and villages across the country, including the western village of Shahrakan and the northeastern islands of Sitra and Nabi Saleh on May 2 to call for the downfall of the Al Khalifa regime.

The main Bahraini opposition group, al-Wefaq, dismissed on May 3 the amendments to the constitution ratified earlier on the same day by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

On May 3, the Bahraini monarch claimed that the “process of reform that marked the beginning of my tenure in power will not stop.”

“We hope in this important period that all forces and groups will assess their actions and join the process of progress and reforms.”

According to the ratified amendments, the Bahraini king has to consult the heads of the elected parliament and the appointed consultative council before dissolving the government.

Abdul Jalil Khalil, a senior member of al-Wefaq, said after the amendments were ratified the king “remains the one to appoint and dismiss the government.”

The opposition wants “a single-chamber parliament that is elected, just as the constitution of 1973 stipulated. These amendments do not abolish the consultative council,” Khalil added.

The monarch also claimed on May 3 that the “doors remain open to dialogue, which is aimed at achieving a national accord.”

Bahraini demonstrators, however, hold King Hamad responsible for the death of protesters during the popular uprising that began in February 2011.
