Bombers target Nigeria telecom firms

The bomb attacks were carried out on Saturday near India’s Airtel and South Africa’s MTN mobile phone companies in northern Nigeria’s largest city of Kano.

According to police, one of the bombers was killed when he drove his vehicle into the office gate of Airtel mobile phone company.

“There has been a bomb blast at Airtel office. The bomber rammed his car into the gate and blew himself up. The building is on fire,” said an officer, speaking on condition of anonymity.

A second car bomber blew himself up when his car exploded near the gate of the office of MTN, the country’s largest mobile network operator.

No group has claimed responsibility of the attacks so far.

However, the extremist group, Boko Haram, has targeted phone companies in Nigeria in the past, accusing them of cooperating with security forces.

The group has also taken credit for a number of deadly shootings and bomb attacks in various parts of the country since 2009.

Human rights groups report that violent actions by Boko Haram since mid-2009 have claimed more than 1,000 lives, including over 300 this year alone.
