Bomb blast kills at least 20 in Pakistan

The Friday blast, which injured 42 others, happened after a bomber detonated his explosives near a security forces’ vehicle at a checkpoint in Khar, the main town of Bajaur Agency.

Officials say that the target of the attack was tribal police forces that are recruited to help the government fight against the Taliban militants in the tribal belt along the Afghan border.

The Bajaur district has been the centre of heavy fighting between Pakistani troops and the Taliban militants. Two bomb attacks killed at least five people in the same district on Thursday.

The Taliban militant group has mounted its bomb attacks in Pakistan, which have often killed civilians, and shooting attacks on security forces in their bid to topple the government.

Over 35,000 Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Pakistan entered an alliance with the US in the so-called war on terrorism, according to local media outlets.
