Bomb blast kills 15 in SW Pakistan

The bomb exploded on Thursday outside the Jamia Islamia Maftah-ul-Uloom madrasa or religious seminary in the troubled city of Quetta, where students and parents had gathered for a graduation ceremony.

“The target was the madrasa, where a certificate-awarding ceremony was taking place,” Deputy Inspector General Qazi Wahid said.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing. Several militant groups are active in the province, which borders both Afghanistan and Iran.

More than 35,000 Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when Pakistan entered an alliance with the US on the so-called war against terrorism.

Since late 2009, there has been a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan, where thousands have been displaced in the aftermath of the militancy sweeping across the country.
