Bomb attack kills seven in Syria

Several security personnel are among those injured in the explosion which took place on Saturday near the al-Masri roundabout in the center of Dara’a city, a city some 100 km south of the Syrian capital Damascus, near the border with Jordan, which was the birthplace of Syria’s unrest.

Local residents say the car exploded in a park near a military checkpoint in Rawda district and witnesses have reported heavy gunfire in the area shortly after the blast.

The violence is one of many by armed groups who have been targeting Syria’s governmental institutions and security agencies since mid-March last year when unrest hit the country.

The government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has said the attacks prove that it is being targeted by “armed terrorist groups,” which it blames for the nearly one-year-old unrest, stating that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.

Yet the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings that took place in the country since the start of the anti-government movement.

Meanwhile, clashes have been reported between Syrian forces and gunmen in the town of Herak. The government has sent in reinforcements to the region. Earlier, the army launched an offensive against armed groups operating in the village of Ain al-Beida, near the border with Turkey. Witnesses say around 2000 soldiers and 15 tanks had been sent to the region.

The Syrian government said in December that “armed terrorist groups” have killed hundreds of people, including more than 2,000 army and security personnel since the start of the unrest in Syria.
