The incident took place on Monday after the militants were caught smuggling heavy weapons into Nigeria, AFP quoted Sagir Musa, a military spokesman in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, as saying on Wednesday.
“The interception was carried out around 21:00 on Monday at the Daban Masara border…Two suspected Boko Haram members escorting the consignment were killed in an exchange of gunfire while the third fled… the weapons were heading to Maiduguri for terrorist attacks,” Musa said.
They were carrying various arms and ammunition including rocket-propelled grenades and Kalashnikov rifles, the military spokesman added.
Musa said that the troops, who killed the militants in the shootout, were parts of a four-country force tasked with cutting off weapons smuggling through the country’s border regions.
