THE Katter family feud now includes duelling advertisements as Carl launches a counter offensive against Bob’s anti-gay marriage ads.

Karl Katter, half brother to Bob Katter who heads Katter’s Australian Party, says he is saddened Bob’s homophobia is overshadowing the good work Bob has done.

Launching his advertisement outside the Queensland Parliament on Wednesday morning he also questioned his brother’s commitment to family values.

“Bob is my half brother and he talks about family value and, you know, I’m family and he doesn’t value me,” Carl Katter said

The KAP has caused outrage in many quarters by releasing a video highlighting LNP leader Campbell Newman’s support of gay marriage.

Carl Katter said the advertisement was homophobic and gave the impression Queensland was still a backward state, which he said was untrue.

Carl Katter says in the add he had built a good life for himself but it was easy to become complacent and forget others were still suffering.

“You can’t just have some equality, you either have it or you don’t,”‘ he says.

He admits growing up in North Queensland as a gay person was not easy.

“Growing up in North Queensland and being gay is not the greatest way to make friends.”‘

The lobby group GetUp, which sponsors the adds, says it’s not enough for Mr Newman to support gay marriage.

Get Up’s Deputy National director Sam McLean said Campbell Newman was going into an election with “a huge discrepancy between his personal position and the position of his party.”

“We congratulate Campbell Newman for his personal support for ending marriage discrimination.” Mr Mclean said.

“Yet the LNP voted unanimously against civil unions for same sex couples.

“This is what Campbell Newman must explain.”

Earlier, The Courier-Mail reported that Bob Katter’s gay half-brother will launch a marriage equality television commercial in Brisbane on Wednesday.

The commercial, featuring Carl Katter and funded by activist group GetUp, is in response to a controversial commercial from Katter’s Australian Party.

The party says the ad was meant to highlight LNP leader Campbell Newman’s personal support for gay marriage, despite the LNP’s official line opposing it.

But it’s been condemned as homophobic by advocates for the gay and lesbian community, and the leaders of both major parties.

“When I saw that homophobic, hateful ad I could not believe it was screening on Australian television and on behalf of an Australian political party,” Carl Katter said in a statement.

“It was sad, it was sick and I knew somebody had to respond.”

Carl Katter said he felt compelled to create a commercial in response with GetUp to hit back at his brother’s homophobic views.

“I couldn’t stop thinking about how my half-brother’s ad seemed designed to make gay people feel inferior,” he said.

“My brother talks about family values, well I’m here to tell him that hate is not a family value.”

The commercial will be screened across Queensland in the lead up to the Queensland election on March 24.
