Authorities intercepted a boat carrying 26 suspected asylum seekers off the West Australian coast on Tuesday.
HMAS Wollongong, under the control of border protection command, intercepted the vessel north-west of Christmas Island on Tuesday night.
Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said the boat was boarded following a request for assistance.
Mr Clare said the passengers would be transferred to Christmas Island for initial security, health and identity checks.
Immigration Minister Chris Bowen and Mr Clare said the boat was the tenth since the opposition rejected the government’s offer to work together on implementing the processing of asylum seekers offshore.
Mr Bowen said the coalition should stop siding with the Australian Greens and opposing offshore processing.
“Australians are sick and tired of the politics and expect both sides of parliament to work together in the national interest to stop people risking their lives at sea,” Mr Bowen said in a statement on Tuesday.
The major parties have been unable to reach an agreement on offshore processing following the High Court’s decision last August to rule the government’s proposed swap deal with Malaysia as “unlawful”.
The opposition wants Labor to reintroduce the previous Howard coalition government’s border protection policies of temporary protection visas for asylum seekers, the offshore processing of asylum claims and turning the boats around where safe to do so.
