An Australian Navy vessel has intercepted a boat carrying 41 people north east of Ashmore Islands in the Timor Sea, the government says.
The boat, which has sought assistance through the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, was initially detected by Customs and Border Protection surveillance aircraft.
It was located by HMAS Bundaberg on Friday night.
Passengers will be transferred to Christmas Island by Customs, where they will undergo security, health and identity checks.
Customs is also hoping to determine their reason for travel.
It is unclear at this stage whether the passengers on the boat are asylum seekers.
