Ms Kelly said she hoped the report would influence city planners and decision makers.
”But we want it to be overheard by the general public,” she said. ”This issue should be higher on the agenda, and if the public knew what worked and what didn’t they would make higher demands.”
Ivan Vugrinec combats social isolation by travelling to Sydney’s Hyde Park every day to play chess and watch others pit their skills against each other at the giant board.
The 69-year-old has lived alone for 10 years and says chess allows him to get out of the house and meet people.
“Sitting by yourself at home watching the box TV, you get sick and you die like that,” he said.
“You have to be active and keep moving.”
