Blood samples may have been taken from Neil Heywood’s body

Dr Lee, who has worked on cases including the O.J. Simpson murder trial and a review of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, was told that the sample had been taken from someone who died after drinking wine.

However, the sample never arrived and no test was carried out.

“They basically want to know if there’s any drugs or poison in there,” Dr Lee, who speaks Chinese fluently, told the Associated Press. However he added: “We don’t ask who is the victim or who is the suspect”. Dr Lee said he could also not recall the name of the police officer with whom he spoke.

The scientist confirmed that his contact was not Wang Lijun, Mr Bo’s former police chief, who sparked the crisis surrounding Mr Heywood’s death by fleeing to the local US consulate in February and telling officials that Mr Bo and his wife were involved. Mr Wang was arrested and has not been seen since.

Dr Lee, who could not be reached for comment last night, has known Mr Wang for more than 25 years.
