The snowstorm called Nemo hit the region with heavy snowfall, resulting in more than two feet of snow in the states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire and almost one meter (38 inches) was reported on Saturday morning in central Connecticut
State of emergency has been declared by the governors of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and Maine and people have been urged to stay indoors.
Over 5,300 flights were reported cancelled and the three major airports in New York City and Boston’s Logan Airport have been closed.
The blizzard caused the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth, Massachusetts to shut down automatically after losing off-site power on Friday night.
More than 300,000 people experienced power failure in Massachusetts as a result of the shutdown and another 350,000 people in other parts of the region were reportedly without power due to the snowstorm.
The snow is blamed for a 19-car pileup in Maine and all roads in Connecticut were ordered to be closed Saturday as roads were impossible to be travelled on and it was reported that emergency responders were stuck on highways as well as other vehicles.
“It’s a real challenge out there,” said emergency worker Michael Tetreau.”The roads are not passable at this point. We are asking everyone to stay home and stay safe.”
Forecasters have predicted more snow for the area on Saturday. Flooding is also expected in the coastal regions, where people are still recovering from Superstorm Sandy, which hit the area in October 2012.
