Two thousand people will be offered free healthy cooking classes under a re-elected Labor government.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh joined celebrity chef Jamie Oliver in Ipswich on Saturday to announce that Labor would spend $460,000 over the next four years on the TAFE cooking lessons, with participants going to three four-hour lessons.
One in five Queensland adults is obese and one in four children is either overweight or obese and the premier says the trend is taking its toll on society.
“We are seeing around Australia and in Queensland a tidal wave of chronic diseases caused by being overweight,” she told reporters in Ipswich.
“Not only does it affect individuals and their families, ultimately our whole health system and community pays for that.
“And we know for a lot of people managing their weight is a lot easier if they can cook simple healthy meals.”
