Bligh, Newman meet on campaign trail

Liberal National Party (LNP) leader Campbell Newman and the woman he once called a sleaze bucket have crossed paths just four days into the Queensland election campaign.

Mr Newman and Premier Anna Bligh came face-to-face in Townsville on Wednesday as they arrived for interviews at the local ABC radio studio.

Their minders didn’t realise until the last minute that the leaders’ interviews had been scheduled consecutively.

The pair shook hands and put on their best election smiles as they posed briefly for the cameras.

Both gushed about enjoying being on the hustings, in their first encounter since the campaign began on Sunday.

“I’m loving it,” Ms Bligh said, standing centimetres away from Mr Newman.

“We’re having a great time,” Mr Newman said.

In the months leading up to the campaign, the pair were not so civil.

Ms Bligh said Mr Newman was an “egotistical maniac”, and he called her a “liar” and a “sleaze bucket”.

Just last week, during the final sitting of parliament, Ms Bligh read Mr Newman’s address aloud and said his family’s business dealings could land him in jail.

Mr Newman on Wednesday told reporters four times during a media conference he had “always had a cordial and professional relationship” with Ms Bligh.

“I’ve been dealing with Anna Bligh for probably the last eight years,” he said.

At a separate media conference, Ms Bligh was asked if she liked Mr Newman.

“Campbell Newman and I are both political opponents, and I’m in this contest to win it and I’m fighting as hard as I can,” she told reporters.

“It is not a friendship circle.”

The premier laughed off suggestions Mr Newman had a limp handshake.

“It was fine,” she chuckled.

Ms Bligh also challenged Mr Newman to debate her during the five-week election campaign.

She said she was in discussions with media outlets to settle a date, but Mr Newman hadn’t yet agreed to the contest.

Mr Newman said a debate was held in December and arrangements were being made for a second debate at the Queensland Media Club before the election on March 24.

“I’m more than happy to debate the premier,” he said.
