Queensland Premier Anna Bligh expects her good friend Kevin Rudd to lose against Prime Minister Julia Gillard in Monday’s federal Labor leadership spill.
“I think it is shaping up as a pretty clear outcome at this stage for the prime minister … but you never know with these sorts of ballots,” she told the Seven Network on Sunday.
“It is a secret ballot and I do think many people will be weighing up some difficult things.”
Numerous federal MPs have said Mr Rudd is difficult to work with, but Ms Bligh believes his popularity with the public will work in his favour when ballots are cast.
“There is no doubt that Kevin Rudd is very, very popular here – he is a much-loved son of Queensland,” she said.
“I think the federal caucus has some very difficult things to weigh up.”
Ms Bligh won’t say who she wants to win but says she’ll happily work with the victor.
She just wants the leadership saga to be over on Monday, so Queensland voters can focus on the March 24 election.
“There is absolutely no doubt that the first week of this election campaign has been unlike any other,” she said.
“Queenslanders really deserve a state election campaign where they can look at the policies, the people, the programs being put forward, and it has been very, very hard for me to get any air time.
“I look forward to this being put behind us this week.”
