Blasts in Turkish Kurdish party office injures 2

World Bulletin / News Desk

Simultaneous bomb blasts hit the offices of Turkey‘s opposition pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in two southern cities on Monday, wounding six people three weeks ahead of a parliamentary election, an HDP official said.

The HDP said President Tayyip Erdogan, who hopes the polls wil pave the way for passage of sweeping new executive powers, bore political responsibility along with his allies for the attacks – the latest in what it said were some 60 assaults on its offices and members in the build-up to the June 7 poll.

The explosion in the city of Adana, where the six were injured, appeared to have come from a package delivered to the office, the official told Reuters.

Footage broadcast by CNN Turk showed windows smashed in a three-storey building, with broken glass and rubble covering the street. One man was seen sitting on a kerb with blood on his head close to the Adana blast.

Turkish nationalists are fiercely opposed to HDP, accusing it of links to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has fought a 30-year insurgency against the state in which 40,000 people have been killed. A peace process designed to end the conflict is in progress.

 HDP RALLY GOING AHEAD

“Dark forces, supported by the political authorities, are being activated because they want to obstruct our party’s development and election work,” an HDP statement said.

“The political responsibility for these attacks lies with President Erdogan, the prime minister and other AKP government members.”

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said no-one had the right to “adopt a sense of victimhood”.

“If there are any provocative actions following these attacks, we will not allow them to be blamed on the government,” he told an election rally in southern Turkey.

The AKP seems certain to emerge from the election as by far the biggest party but Erdogan’s hopes of a majority big enough to secure him sweeping executive powers appear to be dwindling.

If the HDP’s leftist agenda draws broader support beyond its Kurdish base, it could clear the 10 percent threshold to enter parliament and pose a further obstacle to Erdogan’s ambitions.

There were no reports of injuries at the second explosion in nearby Mersin. The explosives were believed to be hidden among flowers sent to the office.

HDP co-leader Selahattin Demirtas, who spoke at a rally in Adana on Sunday, vowed to go ahead with another rally in Mersin on Monday.
