Blasts hit Yemeni polling stations

Two polling stations were targeted in the southern province of Aden and one in port city of al-Makla, also in the south, on Monday.

No one was hurt in the blasts, but a soldier was killed and another was injured after unknown gunmen opened fire on an army patrol in Aden shortly after the explosion.

It was not immediately clear whether the two incidents were related. Southern separatists have boycotted Tuesday’s election in which Vice President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi will be the sole candidate.

Troop reinforcements have arrived in Aden from the capital, Sana’a, to guard voters after hardline members of the separatist Southern Movement threatened violence on Election Day.

Yemeni security sources say dozens of members of the Southern Movement were arrested on Monday for trying “by force to prevent citizens from participating in the elections.”

Anti-election protesters also blocked roads leading to five villages in Daleh Province, making it impossible for poll organizers to send ballot boxes there.

The Referendum-like elections will be held in on February 21 to approve Hadi as a consensus president for a two-year term to replace Saleh, who has ruled the country for almost 33 years.

Saleh is currently in the US for medical treatment. He left Yemen in mid-January, shortly after the country’s parliament passed a law which grants him full immunity from prosecution.

Saleh has vowed to return to Yemen before the election.
