Blast kills Afghan governor, bodyguard

An Afghan governor and his bodyguard have been killed in a bomb attack carried out in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

Nangarhar police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal said that the attack was carried out in the city of Jalalabad on Saturday.

“A mine attached to the vehicle of Nazyan district governor, Noor Agha Kamran, was detonated in the city of Jalalabad,” the police spokesman stated.

“Unfortunately, district governor, Noor Agha Kamran was martyred along with his one bodyguard,” he added.

Nangarhar governor spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai also said that five bystanders were injured in the bomb attack.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bomb attack, but the Taliban militants are often blamed for similar assaults in the country.

On Friday, a bomb explosion killed at least five people and wounded eight others in the southern province of Helmand.

The Taliban militant group has recently stepped up attacks against US-led and Afghan forces, and says it will continue with attacks across Afghanistan.

The militant group has said it would use every possible tactic to inflict casualties on Afghan and US-led forces. Taliban has specifically mentioned insider attacks and bombings.

Local residents say the Taliban militants now control nearly 80 percent of Helmand Province.

The Afghan army and police have stepped up efforts to clear more areas of militants, as Afghanistan is preparing for the presidential and provincial council elections.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but the country is still gripped by insecurity.
