Black bishop victim of ‘naked racism’

A former aide to Sentamu, who was born in Uganda and is the only black bishop in the Church of England, said there was a “stark contrast” between his portrayal and the treatment of other bishops.

Sentamu’s former aide, Rev Arun Arora, said an “anonymous whispering” campaign had been launched after two bishops criticized Sentamu for his African birth.

Speaking with The Sunday Telegraph on the condition of anonymity, the two bishops said Sentamu’s temperament was similar to that of an “African chief”.

“It [the besmirching of John Sentamu] has elicited the naked racism which still bubbles under the surface in our society, and which is exposed when a black man is in line to break the chains of history”, said Arora.

The allegations of racism within the Church come as the racism scandal gripping the British police continues to deepen with the UK police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), investigating 26 police officers.
