Bishop says UK kids suffer from poverty

A Roman Catholic Bishop says many British children are coming to school hungry because their families are suffering from severe poverty.

Reverend Malcolm McMahon, who is slated to become the next Archbishop of Liverpool, said Saturday that the children fall behind in lessons due to poverty, and that teachers observe deprivation in schools every day.

The Bishop of Nottingham said poor families are ashamed of the stigma of not having enough to eat.

“You notice it when you drive through Liverpool. It all looks nice and glossy. But this city will be like many cities, from what we experience in Nottingham or Leicester or other places,” said McMahon, who is also the chairman of the Catholic Education Service.

The administration of UK Prime Minister David Cameron has embarked on austerity measures since it came to power in 2010. The government seeks to bring down a record deficit inherited from the previous Labour administration.

Commentators say the Cameron government has been under fire as British families have not felt any improvement in living standards with one-in-five Britons living below the poverty line.

Rising living costs and stagnant wages in the UK have created a “double squeeze” on the lowest paid, according to a recent study by an independent commission chaired by Archbishop of York John Sentamu.

The current living wage is set at £7.65 an hour nationally or £8.80 for London.
