The United States has sentenced Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law, Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, to life in prison after he was convicted on terrorism charges.
US District Judge Lewis Kaplan issued the decree on Tuesday, saying to Abu Ghaith “You, sir, in my assessment, are committed to doing everything you can to assist al-Qaeda in its mission to kill Americans.”
According to prosecutors, Abu Ghaith worked as Al-Qaeda’s charismatic spokesperson following the 9/11 attacks in America.
The prosecutors said that the man even recorded stirring videos which were all made for the purpose of recruiting additional members.
Assistant US Attorney John Cronan told the court that Abu Ghaith was proud of working for Al-Qaeda to kill American citizens and described him as one of Osama bin Laden’s close aides.
At trial, Abu Ghaith confessed to meeting bin Laden in an Afghan cave on Sept. 11. “We are the ones who did it,” he said bin Laden told him.
In March, a court in Manhattan, New York charged the Kuwaiti-born 48-year-old of plotting to kill US citizens as well as conspiring to supply material support for terrorists.
Abu Ghaith’s lawyers did not dispute that he was with bin Laden in Afghanistan at the time of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. But they argued that Abu Ghaith, who had not yet married bin Laden’s daughter, Fatima, did not know of the attacks in advance and served only as a mouthpiece after the fact.
The United States announced on May 2, 2011 that bin Laden was killed by American forces in his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
