Thousands of miners from several of BHP Billiton’s central Queensland coal mines are planning a seven-day strike from next week.
Up to 4000 workers at seven of BHP’s Bowen Basin coal mines will strike from next Wednesday, the miners’ union says.
Construction Forestry Mining Energy Union (CFMEU) district president Stephen Smyth says BHP has failed to address mine workers’ concerns after 15 months of negotiations for a new enterprise bargaining agreement.
Mr Smyth says there’s many issues under discussion, including miners’ accommodation arrangements, pay rates for subcontractors, and the replacement of union safety staff by managers.
“The workers here feel they’ve been left with no choice but to ramp up industrial action,” Mr Smyth said.
“BHP is making enormous profits out of its coking coal operations in central Queensland, but it doesn’t want to listen to its workforce.”
Workers from the Goonyella Riverside, Broadmeadow, Peak Downs, Saraji, Norwich Park, Gregory Crinum, and Blackwater mines will strike from February 15 until noon on February 22.
Comment was being sought from BHP.
