Several women in the Israeli city of Bet Shemesh decided that they had enough of harassing ultra-Orthodox Jewish men, so they filed a lawsuit.
Four religious Jewish women in the city of Bet Shemesh have filed a lawsuit against the city for failing to prevent the pressure of an extremist sect that seeks to force women to dress according to their own strict rules of modesty.
The lawsuit complains about several signs placed by cult members stating that indecent women are forbidden to walk in the area. One of the plaintiffs told an Israeli newspaper that when she took down one of the signs, a member of the sect saw her and started throwing stones at her.
“There is a menacing atmosphere here due to repeated violence against women who the attackers believe are not dressed appropriately,” she said.
The city is being sued for failing to remove the posters. The women are demanding 25,000 shekels in compensation for emotional distress.
The lawsuit was filed by the Religious Action Center of Israel, a group formed by the Reform Jewish movement. The center has been involved in several controversial lawsuits in an effort to ban segregation on public buses and an attempt to make a full-time yeshiva students not eligible for welfare payments.
Matanya Rosenzoig, on spokesperson for the city of Bet Shemesh said: “There were multiple efforts to remove the signs mentioned in the lawsuit, in coordination with the police. Nevertheless, new signs were put up right away and municipal supervisors do not have the capacity to deal with a situation like that.”
