Besieged holy month in Gaza

Days of Palestine, Gaza Strip -It is the 10th time that the holy month of Ramadan is received in Gaza Strip while it is under strict Israeli, internationally-backed siege.

The holy month of Ramadan is a special time for all Muslims, who feel happy fasting its days and eating nice foods during its nights.

With the consequences of the strict 10-year-old siege on Gaza, Ramadan did not bring happiness with it to the Gazans.

Based on latest statistics, 40 per cent of Gazans live under poverty line and 43 per cent is the unemployment rate. This means that 410,000 families are unable to prepare Ramadan meals.

Gaza markets have suffered an unprecedented drop in sales and commodities because most families do not have the money to buy food and other items they may require.

In addition to this, the high summer temperatures are adding to the people’s suffering as there is an ongoing electricity crisis in the enclave which sees blackouts throughout the Strip for more than a third of the day.

Additionally, more than 10,000 homes destroyed in the 2014 Israeli offensive on Gaza have not been rebuilt; leaving 10,000 families displaced.
