In the lead up to presidential elections, Berlusconi, 76, rallied supporters of his centre-right People of Freedom Party (PDL) in Milan on Sunday with promises of scraping the property tax called IMU that outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti reinstated last year.
Berlusconi proposes to finance the four billion euro plan that he said gives primary residences in 2012 “compensation for an erroneous decision by the state” through public spending cuts, raising taxes on cigarettes and gambling, and taxing the assets of Italians in Switzerland.
He would put the plan to work if he becomes “economy minister” in a government led by his apprentice Angelino Alfano, currently secretary of the PDL.
Monti, who leads the centre-right coalition and tops the prediction polls as successor for the February 24-25 elections, has dismissed Berlusconi’s campaign promise.
“Berlusconi governed for a number of years and never kept a single one of his promises,” he said and added, “Italians have a good memory.”
Monti resigned on December 21 after the PDL party, the largest party in the Italian parliament, threatened to end support for Monti’s government over the deepening recession of the country.
Three days later, President Giorgio Napolitano dissolved the parliament and announced the date of the presidential elections.
