Ben Carson, a Republican candidate for President of the United States, has complained about being vetted, especially about his autobiography “Gifted Hands”. At a press conference he said, “I don’t remember this level of scrutiny for President Obama when he was running.” In fact”, he said, “I remember just the opposite.”
Carson has no experience or record in public office for voters to study, so any conclusions about his performance as president (should he win) are of necessity found in his autobiography. By contrast, Pres. Obama had served in his state’s legislature and the nation’s senate. Nevertheless, it is a false memory that Obama was not vetted. During Obama’s first campaign for president in 2008, his relationships with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, with Bill Ayers, and with fundraiser Antoin Rezko were constantly scrutinized. According to historian Kevin Kruse, from mid-2007 to the end of election in November 2008, in the New York Times alone, there were 138 stories that refer to Obama and Wright, 78 that refer to Obama and Ayers, and 38 that refer to Obama and Rezko. NBC News conducted a similar search of the Times and Washington Post and found 206 stories that centered on or referred to either Obama and Wright or Obama and Ayers. Additionally, throughout the campaign there were stories about Obama’s drug use as a student, about his time as a community organizer in Chicago, and about his birth certificate.
By the time he won the Democratic nomination, the American people knew a lot about Obama’s life and views. It is unrealistic for Carson to expect less for himself. A little reading of recentcampaign history might refreshen his memory and strengthen his patience during his own vetting.
