nsnbc : As a European first, Belgian authorities have formed a joint investigation team of Belgian investigators and the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate the double terrorist attack in Brussels on March 22.
Belgium’s Federal Public Prosecutor Frédéric Van Leeuw confirmed in parliament that the joint investigation team had been established two weeks ago. Van Leeuw noted that the agreement had, among others, been reached because several of the victims of the attacks in the terrorist attacks had been U.S. citizens.
Van Leeuw did not explain why it had taken two weeks to publicly announce the creation of the team in parliament. The Public Prosecutor limited, at least the publicly accessible part of his statement to saying that the FBI was providing “very concrete assistance that already had helped with a number of things”. He added that the “American colleagues have a lot more potential”.
Van Leeuw did not explain explicitly what the FBI members of the team had been helping with but referred to examples instead. Among others, he referred to deciphering locked messages and data.
“I always received the same message about some encrypted messages: “This is not possible”. But all of a sudden it was possible to read them. I won’t go into further detail, but I think it’s clear enough.” Van Leeuw did not specify whether he was talking about cracking iPhones or reading WhatsApp messages. Belgium has also established a joint investigation with France in the aftermath of the Paris attacks.
Both the Paris attacks and the attacks in Brussels in March have left the public with a cohort of unanswered questions about intelligence and police services contacts to the alleged perpetrators prior to the attacks, fake video and CCTV images and more.
