nsnbc : Belgian police have raided about twenty offices of the transport company Jost Group as part of a large-scale investigation into organized social fraud.
Police investigators suspect that the transport company Jost Group evaded social security contributions worth millions of euros between 2014 and 2016.
Investigators are also looking into possible human trafficking. Jost denies the allegations. Federal judicial authorities, on the other hand, say “This is about serious and organized social fraud.”
The Jost Group is among others suspected of establishing fake companies in Romania and Slovakia. These companies were allegedly established to employ over 1,100 drivers from these two countries while systematically skipping social security contributions to Belgium.
A similar scheme is said to have been set up in Luxembourg, but this time with Belgian drivers. The scheme, has, if it is found to be illegal, cost the Belgian state an estimated 55 million, not even to mention the defrauded drivers and their possible losses.
Eric Van der Sypt, the spokesman of the federal judicial authorities, was also talking about possible human trafficking and social dumping. Romanian drivers were heavily underpaid and had to work very long hours. They also had to live in their Lorries for several weeks continuously.
Detectives raided several offices in Wallonia, but also premises in Antwerp, Kontich, Zaventem and Ieper. Jost denies the allegations and says it wants to cooperate with investigators.
