nsnbc : The body of a Belgian helicopter pilot who fell out of a military helicopter in the Skies near the town of Huy in Liège province on Sunday was found on Monday after an extensive search.
On Sunday the pilot suddenly dropped out of the helicopter during a demonstration flight and fell several hundred meters to the ground. The co-pilot managed to land the helicopter safely. The incident is thus far unexplained and causes a great deal of speculation in Belgium.
It wasn’t just the question how a pilot could fall out of a helicopter that puzzled Belgians – fasten seat belt – O.K.? What caused even more speculation was that the search Sunday afternoon didn’t give any results – no pilot was found despite the use of infrared imaging and other high-tech instrumentation in the search for the missing pilot.
The helicopter had been taking part in a parachute demonstration as part of an open day at the Belgian Army’s Genie Battalion. Two pilots were aboard the Agusta A-109 helicopter when one of them fell out at an altitude of several hundred metres.
An army helicopter equipped with a thermal camera flew over the area where the pilot had fallen out, but was unable to find him. The Federal Police Missing Person’s Cell also attended the scene with two dogs. Meanwhile, soldiers searched the heavily wooded area where the pilot’s remains were believed to be. The search was halted at nightfall.
The pilot’s body was finally found on Monday near to the town of Huy. The exact circumstances surrounding his fall from the helicopter remain unclear. Suicide has not been ruled out. Other things that haven’t been ruled out yet are sloppy security protocols, no seat belt while flying with the door open, or maybe forgotten that it were other people, the ones with a parachute who were supposed to jump?
