Belarus raps Europarl resolution

“The European Parliament does nothing in its honor by seriously interfering in the practices of law and order in a sovereign country,” said the Belarusian Foreign Ministry in a statement on Friday.

The European Union on Thursday passed a resolution against Belarus, criticizing Minsk for implementing death penalty and calling on President Alexander Lukashenko to abolish capital punishemnt from the penal system.

“The European Parliament de facto stands on the side of terrorists with incompetent suggestions of doubt on the results of investigations and decisions by the Belarusian court in cases of terrorist acts,” the statement continued.

Belarus Supreme Court sentenced two suspects to death for bombing an underground railway in the capital, Minsk, in April 2011. The bomb attack killed at least 15 people and injured hundreds of others.

Human rights groups have cast doubts on the evidence against the two men, urging Lukashenko not to execute them.
