Belarus air force commander loses job over teddy bear invasion

Speaking to military chiefs last week, the president railed: “How can
this provocation with a light aircraft – that not only crossed the border
but invaded the Republic of Belarus with impunity – be explained?”

He added: “Why didn’t the commanders intercept this flight? Who were they
sympathising with?”

Anton Suryapin, a photography student who published pictures on his website of
some of the dropped teddy bears – sent to him anonymously – was arrested
last month. He and Sergei Basharimov, an estate agent, are suspected of
helping organise the “bombing” and face up to seven years in jail
for aiding an illegal border crossing if convicted.

Mr Lukashenko is subject to an EU-wide visa ban for his part in a brutal
crackdown on Belarus’s opposition after disputed elections in December 2010.
The Foreign Office refused permission for him to travel to the Olympic Games
in London.
