Beirut snubs US over Syria

“We do not want a second Camp Ashraf in Lebanon, and we do not want a security problem that exceeds our capabilities,” Lebanese Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour said on Wednesday.

He was referring to the military base built in Iraq’s northern province of Diyala under executed dictator Saddam Hussein for notorious Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization terrorists.

Lebanon cannot heed such a request and it will pursue its own interests, Mansour emphasized.

The remarks came in response to US Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly’s call on the Lebanese government to support Syrian army deserters and anti-government militants crossing into the Lebanese territory.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. The violence has claimed the lives of hundreds of people, including many security forces.

The West — which now openly back sending weapons to anti-Damascus forces in northern Syria — and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of President Bashar al-Assa of killing protesters.

Damascus, however, blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups’ for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

The United States, Britain and France, Arab states like Saudi Arabia and Qatar as well as Turkey have supported measures against Assad’s government.
