Repeats make up 61 per cent of shows on BBC TV, the Corporation admitted last night.

Almost half of programming on BBC2 is old content, compared with 30 per cent five years ago.

Even on flagship BBC1, recycled content counts for a third of its programmes and has increased in peak viewing times.

Repeats of classic shows such as Only Fools and Horses currently make up 61% of shows on BBC TV

The figures, released by the BBC in response to a Freedom of Information request, challenge its claimed commitment to ‘original programming’.

Bosses have warned that the number of repeats could keep rising as cuts to save the corporation a total of £1.3billion take hold.

They have admitted that BBC2 will effectively become a repeats channel, with 56 per cent of its content rehashed.

The high level of repeats on digital channels led to calls last night for them to be axed.

In 2011, just 15.8 per cent of programming on BBC3 and only 21.2 per cent on BBC4 was new.

Even in peak time, almost three-quarters of BBC3 shows and more than half of BBC4’s are reruns, even though the channels only run from 7pm to 4am.

Matthew Elliott, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance campaign group, said: ‘Viewers will feel cheated that they are getting endless repeats in return for their licence fee each year. Auntie should scrap BBC3 if there aren’t enough new programmes.

‘Bosses need to focus on delivering high quality and unique programming.’
The BBC, which released figures for the year to last March, said it was focusing on its prime-time content, particularly on BBC1. But it conceded there would be sacrifices elsewhere.

A spokesman said: ‘Repeats are scheduled to reach different audiences and are rarely shown in the same slot. On BBC1, for example, over 91 per cent of programmes in prime time are new.

‘Audiences value having several opportunities to catch something they may have missed.’

WE PAY FOR SKY WE PAY OUR LISCENCE ALSO FOR SOD ALL ON THE TELLY NOT ON THEY ARE TAKING MONIES FOR OLD ROPE FOR ALL THE REPEATS. xMAS A NIGHT MARE NOTHING TO WATCH EXCEPT REPEATS SAME GOES FOR SKY BILLS FAR TO HIGH

The BBC said it was focusing on its prime-time content, yeah right as New Years Eve broadcasting consisted of 40+ year old re-runs of Morecomb Wise.. Now I’m the first to admit that these comedians were superb but stop taking the p*** Mark Thompson, 40 year old programs on New Years Eve, is that the best you can do. Now the amount of re-run broadcasting has reached epidemic proportions there is NO justification for any licence fee and the BBC must go commercial and live or die. Why should the tax payers pay for a left wing propaganda channel that offers virtually no new programming and resorts to depressing rubbish such as East Enders and re-runs and precious little else. The money that the BBC gets now just pays for its mind control freaks and leaves little else for good programs and that’s the truth. BTW Mr. Thompson, you seemed to have gone very quiet over your internet ex-pat service, whats up, little interest in a sub standard pay for view service !!!!

Although the licence fee has been frozen, we still have to pay it and it amounts to 2.5 billion pounds per annum. Without any fighting for advertising or for ratings. So why all the repeats? Can’t they downsize the BBC itself and commission progs from independents? They don’t need an army of sprts presenters at the Olympics, but just matck the Sky TV team. If they have to save 1.3 billion why the move up North to Salford? The BBC shouldn’t be competing for ratings with ITV as it doesn’t need to. Just produce an interesting mix of pragrammes based on the BBC charter. Surely it’s not that difficult since it is not a commercially driven organisation?

Well if the BBC are going to continue with increasing repeats then it’s time to abolish the TV licence. One less bill to pay.

Stop paying these celeb dancing while on ice things for petes sake, soaps and boring dramas and we may get some decent programmes.
– gh1234, waterlooville ========= Absolutely precious gh1234. even with my limited knowledge of popular culture I know that Dancing on Ice is an ITV programme. ITV, paid for by everyone whether they own a TV or not, now then – how is that fair that I have to pay for the malignant c–p that the ITV serve up to us?

what a stupid comment from The Average DiM reader…, Gullible- Second home owner- Ghastly, 11/1/2012 10:34 not all of us work Monday to Friday, i have a day off in the week and work Saturday and Sunday so do a lot of people so just because someone comments of here during the day does not mean they are not at work , think before you post!
And on another note(staying on topic),we don’t have a TV any more and the only TV we watch on BBC iplayer are wildlife documentaries and doctor who. Natures weirdest events was good too,oh and Timmy time lol
I find it hard to find anything interesting to watch repeats or not.

To balance the BBC books and stop the endless waste, they could have got rid of many lefty fatcats in their huge self-serving bureaucracy, some of the endless news readers, presenters and luvvies all on vast salaries paid for by licence payers. But no, they choose to punish their customers rather than themselves. Typical lefty move’; typical BBC

Another day, another opportunity for the British media to mock the anti BBC bias of this ignorant rag and it’s equally ill informed but highly opinionated readership.

Have repeat stamped on your TV licence and when the man comes knocking because you haven’t bought a new one tell him if they are going to keep showing repeats then the BBC can only have 39% of the licence fee as you have already paid to watch what they are showing.

Look to your right at the Sidebar of Shame and you can see that 80% of the DM’s articles are repeats. People in glass houses…
