The police chief said that the apartment is booby trapped with “various
incendiary and chemical devices” and five buildings nearby have been
evacuated. He described it as an “active and difficult scene” that
may take days for officers to deal with.
He added: “We’re not speculating on motive” but that Holmes
surrendered without incident. He appears to have fired the AR-15 assault
rifle, the Remington shotgun and one of two .40 calibre Glocks inside of the
theatre. At least one person was injured in an adjacent theatre by a bullet
that passed through a wall.
An emotional Governor John Hickenlooper said: “This is a safe city, in a
safe state in a safe country.”
Mayor Steve Hogan added: “We took a blow today but we will get back on
our feet.” He urged parents to talk to their children and “let
them know this is an isolated incident. It’s tragic, it’s horrible but it’s
isolated and we have to talk about it”.
