Tens of thousands of Basques have staged a massive demonstration in Spain to call on the government to allow ETA prisoners to serve the rest of their prison terms in the Basque region.
Protesters took to the streets in the northern city of Bilbao late on Saturday to demand that ETA prisoners not be sent to prisons far from their hometowns.
“The solution, Basque prisoners to the Basque region,” read banners carried by the protesters, who staged a silent march to avoid confrontations with riot police under orders to stop the gathering if pro-ETA slogans were chanted.
According to an amendment to the country’s 1975 anti-terrorism law, Spain has dispersed ETA prisoners, with nearly 700 inmates held in jails scattered across Spain and France and less than 50 serving in the Basque region.
Listed as a terrorist organization by Spain, the United States and the European Union, ETA is held accountable for the deaths of 829 people in bombings and shootings since the late 1960s.
The group is seeking the creation of a Basque homeland in northern Spain and southwest France.
