A gang of up to six men armed with baseball bats has terrorised four Melbourne taxi drivers during a string of violent robberies that left one driver in hospital.
The balaclava-clad men targeted four cars in just over an hour in Melbourne’s west, using stolen cars to ambush the drivers, before robbing them and threatening them with baseball bats.
At least two drivers were struck during the attacks, with one taken to hospital with a broken arm and another suffering minor injuries when he was hit on the head.
Police say the first incident happened about midnight (AEST) in Anderson Road, Sunshine, when two cars blocked a taxi in, forcing the driver to stop.
Between four and six men wearing balaclavas and brandishing baseball bats then got out of the cars and started smashing the taxi’s panels and windows, demanding cash, including the driver’s wallet.
The driver complied and the men then fled.
Three similar attacks took place shortly after – in Somerville Road, Brooklyn, at 12.20am, in Fitzgerald Road, Laverton North, at 12.45am, and in Bradman Street, Sunshine North, at 1.15am.
In the Fitzgerald Road attack the driver was taken to hospital with a broken arm, while in the Bradman Street robbery the driver suffered minor injuries when he was struck to the head.
Police say the offenders used stolen vehicles in the attacks.
They are hunting for a red Subaru, registration number PB 269, and a ZX Nissan sedan, registrations number XOB 029.
Police are calling on anyone with information to come forward.
