Video: ACT budget deficit blowout
(7pm TV News ACT)
ACT Treasurer Andrew Barr will hand down his first budget today, confirming the Territory’s deficit for the next financial year will reach about $315 million.
The decision by the Federal Government to bring forward some funding to this financial year, will improve the 2011-12 figures to a $125 million deficit.
But Mr Barr says that will put pressure on the following year.
He says today’s budget will be balanced and measured.
“We need to have a robust capital works program, and we will have that in the budget to ensure that their is significant economic activity in the Territory,” he said.
Mr Barr expects the budget to return to surplus in 2015-2016 at about $25 million.
He says this will be achieved in an economic and socially responsible way.
But the ACT Opposition has says the Government is announcing one of the worst deficits in the ACT’s history.
