Baroness Ashton in diplomatic row over Toulouse killing ‘transcript’

Isreal ministers attacked any linkage between its military operations and terrorist or criminal attacks, with one senior figure calling for her resignation.

Until the clarification Lady Ashton’s office had mounted a strong defence of the incorrect version of her speech before realising that she had been misquoted by her own officials.

“It has been a deeply distressing few hours for me that people should have treated what I was saying in the way that it was,” she told MEPs.

In a speech at a Brussels event for young Palestinian activists, the EU’s high representative” for foreign affairs, paid tribute to children killed in “terrible circumstances”.

To illustrate her point, Lady Ashton referenced the Toulouse and the deaths of children in terrorist attacks in Norway and in Syria.

“When we see what is happening in Gaza and Sderot, in different parts of the world – we remember young people and children who lose their lives,” she added.

But due to an error by officials, the phrase “and Sderot” was omitted, reinforcing the impression of a linkage between Israeli military operations in Gaza and the Toulouse murders.

The clarification is unlikely to sooth Israel’s angry government after Martin Callanan, a Tory MEP and chairman of the European Conservatives, said: “This may have been an avoidable bungle by Ashton’s office but she should not have gone anywhere near the subject of the Toulouse shootings when talking about the Middle East.”
