Barlow health fraud case delayed

Lawyers acting for accused Queensland Health fraudster Joel Barlow have been given extra time to prepare their case.

Barrister David Shepherd told the Brisbane District Court on Monday he had recently been forced to take time off work due to “unfortunate circumstances”.

This meant he had not been able to fully familiarise himself with the matter.

He was granted another four weeks to read the prosecution’s brief and meet with his client.

Barlow, also known as Hohepa Morehu-Barlow, was arrested in December.

The 36-year-old is alleged to have defrauded the government department while working there between 2007 and 2011.

The Queensland government has already received permission to sell his inner-city waterfront unit and three luxury cars, among other assets.

The matter will be mentioned again on August 24.
