We live in a world dominated by social media. Many of us, myself included at times, cannot go more than a couple of hours without logging in to at least one of the major social media platforms. Whether it be perusing Facebook’s newsfeed, seeing what’s trending on Twitter, or liking the latest photos posted by those that we follow on Instagram, we’re hooked.
We’re hooked to the point that a good portion of what we tend to post has become so cliché and expected that not much variety still exists. From selfies, to party shots, to pictures with our grandparents we all seem to be posting relatively the same thing day in and day out.
In an attempt to poke fun at the online similarities that so many of us seem to share, an anonymous wedding photographer from Portland, Oregon started an Instagram account unlike any other. Operating under the name Socality Barbie the account features all of the cliché pictures we love to post, but with a Barbie doll in our place.

The seeming message behind this Instagram account reminds me of the infamous quote, “You were born original. Don’t die a copy.” We certainly are all unique from one another, yet when it comes to social media we seem to love to make ourselves seem as interesting as possible, and that “interesting” framework seems to be pretty commonly practiced.
Because we can, many of us strive to use the online world to create a perfected version of ourself. We formulate witty statuses, stage pictures and add whatever filters necessary to make that snapshot of our life seem perfect. When the truth is, it’s what goes on in between those posed pictures and statuses that truly shows who we are, and who that is, is both unique and worthy of being celebrated.
As an occasionally cliché social media user myself, I was happy to stumble upon this Instagram account and am grateful for the message it delivers. What are your thoughts on the pictures? Are they making you re-think how you use social media? Or do they simply just make you laugh? Let us know via the comment section below.
