The protests led by former Prime Minister and leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Begum Khaleda Zia on Sunday continued with a mass six-hour hunger strike with protesters demanding the release of top members of the opposition groups, including organizing secretary of BNP, Elias Ali.
The 18-party opposition alliance also demanded the restoration of a care-taker government to oversee national elections due in 2014.
This is while the incumbent Premier Sheikh Hasina abolished the 15-year-old system last year and repeatedly refused to restore it, arguing that the move was in line with the constitution.
Tensions between opposition parties and the government have heightened since Ali and his driver were abducted in Dhaka on April 17.
In April, the opposition groups staged five days of nationwide general strikes to protest Ali’s disappearance.
