On Thursday, a UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky said in a statement that Ban voiced concern over “the wave of violence and attacks in Pakistan that has targeted politicians, political rallies, and election offices ahead of the elections.”
The statement also added that Ban acknowledges the efforts being made by Pakistani officials to protect party leaders, election officials and voters on the day of elections.
“He acknowledges the efforts being made by the government of Pakistan to ensure the safety and security of candidates, party workers, election officials, observers and voters on the day of the elections,” the statement said.
Pakistan is preparing to hold its National Assembly elections on May 11. The National Assembly has a total of 342 members, 272of which are elected by the popular vote. The last National Assembly elections were held in February 2008.
Pakistan will also hold elections for 577 seats of the provincial assemblies on the same day.
This is while, the death toll from attacks ahead of Pakistan’s elections has surpassed 100.
Local leader of Pakistan’s People’s Party, Zahir Shah, was also recently killed in a roadside bomb attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan claimed responsibility the attack on Zahir Shah.
The militant group also issued a statement calling for bombings and attacks in several parts of Pakistan to undermine the elections.
