Ball in Macklin’s court on pokies: Wilkie

Negotiations over the federal government’s watered down pokies reforms are on the brink of collapse with independent MP Andrew Wilkie threatening to scuttle the plan.

Mr Wilkie has set a deadline of close of business on Friday to reach an agreement with Community Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin.

He wants legislation to specify that poker machines must be “flick of a switch” ready for a future government to activate mandatory precommitment technology.

Ms Macklin claims the government’s legal advice says the draft laws already achieve that aim.

Mr Wilkie has warned the government he’ll be a “ticking time bomb” over the next 18 months if they don’t amend the laws to his satisfaction.

The MP said the minority government could not afford to put him offside as controversy surrounds one of its backbenchers, Craig Thomson.

Mr Thomson is being investigated over allegations he used a union credit card to pay for prostitutes when he headed up the Health Services Union.

Mr Wilkie and Ms Macklin have been negotiating since late March after the government opted to delay debate on draft laws.

They are not scheduled to meet in person on Friday.

In January, Prime Minister Julia Gillard reneged on a deal with Mr Wilkie to roll out mandatory precommitment technology to all poker machines by 2014 in favour of a trial in the ACT.
