Bahraini doctor in 4th day of hunger

Samaheeji, who has been convicted of aiding injured protesters, had called the charges political and fabricated.

The hunger striker is among nine medical professionals sentenced to jail terms of up to five years for, what Manama calls, siding with protesters last year and trying to topple the country’s ruling system. International rights groups have condemned the rulings.

The doctors, however, argue that they were only doing their jobs during the protests and the subsequent violent crackdown by the Saudi-backed security forces.

Starting his strike on Thursday, Samaheeji said that he wants to draw international attention to the plight of Bahraini doctors.

The sheikdom has been the scene of anti-regime demonstrations since February 2011. The Manama regime forces have been cracking down on the protests ever since.

Scores of people have been killed and many others arrested during the revolution. Bahrainis hold King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa responsible for the death and arrest of protesters.
