Bahraini activist’s heath deteriorates

Al-Khawaja, top Bahraini human rights activist, refused to eat for 27 days in protest against Manama’s ongoing crackdown on protesters and the harsh prison conditions.

Activists, human rights organizations and anti-regime protesters have repeatedly called on Manama government to free al-Khawaja currently serving a life sentence.

The focus of recent anti-government demonstrations in Bahrain has been the immediate release of opposition leaders and human rights activists, including al-Khawaja.

On February 22, thousands of Bahrainis gathered outside the United Nations headquarters in the capital, Manama, to demand the release of al-Khawaja and several other activists. Bahrainis have also set up road blocks across the kingdom to express solidarity with al-Khawaja.

Al-Khawaja, the co-founder and former president of the Bahrain Center for Human Right, was sentenced to life in prison by a military court last April for “plotting to overthrow the government.”

Meanwhile, activists have announced plans for a big rally on March 9 to revitalize their protest against the ruling Al Khalifa family.

Bahrainis have been staging demonstrations since mid-February 2011, demanding political reform and a constitutional monarchy, a demand that later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the ruling Al Khalifa family following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.

Scores of people have also been killed and many others have been injured in the Saudi-backed crackdown on peaceful protesters in Bahrain.

The Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry issued a report on November 23, 2011, saying that the Manama regime had used “excessive force, including the extraction of forced confessions against detainees.”
