Bahrain protest marches ahead of demonstration anniversary

Amnesty International said yesterday that at least 20 opposition sympathisers
had been killed, in addition to the 35 identified in an independent report
for Bahrain
last year. “The security forces have continued to use excessive force to
deal with demonstrators,” it said. “Several protesters have died since the
end of November as a direct or indirect result of the inappropriate use of
tear gas.”

In an interview, King Hamad promised to address the demands of the protesters
but said the demonstrations were influenced by Iran. Sheikh Ali Salman, the
leader of the biggest opposition party, appealed to his followers to ensure
peaceful demonstrations, warning youths to refrain from throwing petrol
bombs.

An American “supercop” brought in to reform the security services warned that
mindless violence had taken grip. John Timoney, the Miami police chief
between 2003 and 2010, said authorities faced the daily perils of youths
flinging “molotovs and iron bars, usually in back alleys. It’s hard to
dissect a political message coming out of that. It’s rage more than
anything.”
