The arrests were made on Thursday at an opposition rally which was attended by hundreds of people outside the ex-Soviet state’s public television station, which is the Azerbaijani partner for Eurovision broadcasts.
“Thirty to 35 people were detained,” a spokeswoman for the Public Chamber opposition alliance, Leila Mustafayeva, told AFP.
Protesters say they’re fed up with the secular government’s anti-Islam campaign, which includes destroying mosques, banning the Islamic veil, and detaining Muslim activists.
The demonstrators are demanding the release of political prisoners and urging the government to step down.
Authorities in the mainly Muslim state of Azerbaijan want to use the pop contest to win West’s acclaim for the energy-rich country.
The activists in Azerbaijan have also opposed a gay parade planned to be held on the last day of the Eurovision contest. The protesters say the Muslim country is no place for such immoral practices.
