Investigators are trying to determine the cause of an overnight fire at a car wrecking yard and metal recycling plant on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

It took 40 firefighters and eight trucks to bring the blaze at Molendinar under control.

The blaze began around 11:00pm (AEST), destroying a car wrecking yard and metal recycling plant in Harper Street.

Fire Inspector Greg Tomlinsen says crews did a good job to contain the fire.

“They have extinguished the majority of the fire but unfortunately due to the seat of the fire, there’s going to be hot spots that appear,” he said.

“We’ll have crews on fire watch just making sure that those little hot spots don’t escalate into larger fires.

“The situation is under control and the crews are just going through the damping down stage at this point.

“Crews have done a wonderful job to cut it off and stop it from doing any further damage.”

Southport Fire Station Officer Ralph Luck says it was a difficult fire to fight because the nearest water supply was some distance away.

“There was quite extensive damage right throughout the property so it will take quite some time to establish a cause,” he said.

“There was a very large building materials warehouse downwind from the fire which some parts of it – the roof area – had actually caught fire.

“Through the quick actions of the fire guys, we were able to extinguish that before it spread.”
