“Cattle are kept in an unacceptably disturbing way, if they are held within a fenced meadow close to residential buildings,” the judge’s ruling said.
“The animals can cause a lout a noise at night through the clanging of their bells, and that can disturb the nocturnal peace of the residents.”
The ruling added that cow bells were not a traditional feature of rural residential areas. The farmer, who was made no comment on the affair, faces a fine if he fails to de-bell his livestock.
Austrian papers speculated that the ruling might herald other court cases brought by residents of Austria’s rural hinterland disturbed by the sound of cow bells.
